Artist Tomas Vu has taken his dystopian, futuristic art and transferred it from the canvas to surfboards. By hand carving paulownia timber and laser etching his geometric and often psychedelic images into the wood he creates a new spin on the centuries old Alaias board. Tomas told me that these boards are not merely gallery pieces but each board is “activated” before it’s shown, that is “at least surfed once”. I’ve never met an artist whose inspirations we’re drawn from such unique places, Tomas is certainly in a league of his own.

Shelton, WA | March 2014
An assignment for a series called Empowering Innovators by Intel took me up to the Puget Sound region of Washington. Known for its incredible geography the sound is a fjord system of flooded glacial valleys. It’s also home to Taylor Shellfish Farms, the largest producer of shellfish in the country. We spent the day with Stuart Thomas and got our hands dirty in the Oyster beds. But no trip to Shelton is complete without a stop at Xhin’s Clam and Oyster House to sample the local catch cooked up by the best in the business. Xhin was an amazing host and as you can tell didn’t let us leave hungry.
